The IPP Online

IPP Online is primarily a Web-based article indexing system based on the Index to Philippine Periodicals (IPP) which was originally produced as a printed research guide to periodical articles indexed by the Bibliography and Indexing Section of the UP Diliman University Library.

This Online version currently contains more recent article indexes (mostly from 2010 onwards) from various popular and scholarly Philippine journals/magazines and offers more content, e.g., searchable abstracts and full-text articles in PDF.

The following are the major components of the system:
 » Periodicals Management
 » Article Indexing
» Simple Search Engine with "phrase", "rootword", and Boolean searching and option to limit search by specific field (e.g., author, title, subject, abstract)
 » Built-in Authority Control
» Digital File attachments (viewing uploaded digital copy of articles)
 » Full-text search option

About the IPP

One of the earliest publications that the UP Diliman Library produces is the Index to Philippine Periodicals (IPP). Since its first issue which came out in 1956, the IPP marks this year, 2013, its 57th year of existence. It has sustained itself through the years because it is not only a valuable bibliographic research guide to both librarians and researchers but also because the product is very much in demand by various other libraries which simply rely on the more comprehensive indexing services of the UP Diliman Library.

IPP, or the Index to Philippine Periodicals is name subject index to articles of periodicals published in the Philippines. It covers 4 key subject areas in field humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and applied sciences. Indexing of articles is selective. Articles on non-Philippine subjects are not indexed. It is compiled, edited and maintained by the Bibliography and Indexing Section of the Main Library and issued on a quarterly basis every year.

It has also been produced in three generations of formats. It began in the original print format reproduced via the mimeographing machine. This represented the first generation of IPPs. Then the second generation came – in print format still but encoded using the computer machine. Finally, came the third generation – which is in electronic or CD-ROM format. The IPPs are produced today either in computerized print format or in electronic format. The former relies on paper technology; the latter, on paperless technology.

Indeed, the IPPs have gone through a lot of changes. In its 57th anniversary, it is worth going back to retrace its history and evolution.
